Council rejects bid for big b doubles on Olympic campus

"It's been a really interesting experience, particularly around those issues which are pretty divisive," he said. "The whole bid process was quite emotional for me because I was very conflicted as I didn't want to sign up to make that commitment.

"The key to this is you want to take your time, make the best use of the infrastructure, that's how the bid process works.

"The issue is now the city should be able to deliver something in five years and it has to be a good enough product so you're able to deliver.

"You can only deliver something if all the public are on board but if not, how do we deliver something when there's no money in it to fund things?"

The bid was announced in October. It would see the proposed new buildings built between 2020 and 2024.

The developer, Kyncl, is expected to receive funding from the NSW Government.

The project has been controversial in recent months and some of the key parties, including the Greens, the LNP and the state Opposition have publicly urged the city to withdraw.

But City Hall has maintained that it will not, saying it will take a new lease on life when the Olympic sports facilities are ready.

It believes it will provide a huge boost for the wider region.

In May the council held a free workshop in Melbourne for the public to discuss possible sites for the Olympic Park.

Council chief executive Greg Hunt said he was "very confident that the bid process is going to deliver a good thing for Victoria and Melbourne".

"In no uncertain terms, we believe our bid will be a strong contender for the world's tallest building, and if it is, we're not the least bit disappointed to not receive it," he said.

"It's a great opportunity for Victoria's economy to continue to grow.

"We've received a fantastic response on the tender process and a wonderful response from the public at large.

"We're obviously going to be looking closely at the project during this period and we'll be looking into the detail of how the council's business is managed and if there are other possibilities for further funding, but we're going to have our eyes on that.

"We also have a strong track record of being an inclusive city... there's no doubt that we have a lot of very exciting development projects going on, and we would certainly appreciate any feedback that we can give."
